Oksana was severely exposed to radiation when she was born in 1989, barely three years after the Chornobyl nuclear accident. As a result, she was born with congenital impairments such as tibial hemimelia, webbed fingers without thumbs, and six toes on each foot. She struggled with these issues while living alone in an orphanage after being abandoned by her birth parents.

Gay Masters, a lady hoping to become a mother, came upon Oksana’s picture in a Courier journal when she was on the other side of the globe. Gay knew she had discovered her daughter when she noticed a spark in Oksana’s eyes, even though she had intended to adopt a baby. A mother’s love can sometimes go beyond biological relationships.

Adoption proved to be a difficult procedure. Gay faced difficulties when a University of Louisville speech pathologist discouraged him from doing so. Still, she persisted, determined to bring Oksana home. After learning of Gay’s plans, Oksana’s orphanage gave her a photo of her soon-to-be mother, inspiring hope in the young girl for a secure home and a caring mom.

Following an extensive 24-month procedure, Gay was able to bring Oksana home. The young child knew her mommy the instant they met. Gay’s unrelenting affection started to nurture Oksana, who flourished under her care despite losing both of her legs at the ages of nine and fourteen.

Gay urged Oksana to pursue athletics after noticing her love for sports. Naturally athletic, Oksana won many gold medals in cycling, cross-country skiing, and rowing. From an abandoned youngster, Oksana rose to become an Olympic champion, winning two gold medals at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Even though they had different interests—Gay loved literature, while Oksana loved climbing trees—love was what kept them together. Oksana overcame the physical, psychological, and sexual trauma she had experienced at the orphanage because of Gay’s care.

As an adult, Oksana wants to use her tale to inspire others by publishing it in the book “The Hard Parts: A Story of Courage and Triumph.” Her mission is to empower and cure orphanage survivors by utilizing the therapeutic power of sports.

Oksana’s tale serves as evidence of the transformational potential of love. An abandoned boy became a champion in life and sports thanks to Gay’s unfailing love. Now a devoted advocate, Oksana hopes to improve the lives of kids similar to her.
