In the 59th annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, amateur British photographer Nima Sarikhani won the coveted People’s Choice title with her ethereal portrait of a sleeping polar bear on an iceberg.

With an incredible 75,000 votes, Sarikhani’s captivating image took first place, creating a new record for the competition. After being chosen from an amazing pool of around 50,000 entries, Sarikhani defeated 24 other finalists. Both judges and voters found great resonance in Sarikhani’s image.

Dr. Douglass Gurr, Director of the Natural History Museum, says of Sarikhani’s winning entry: “Nima’s breathtaking and poignant image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet.” His provocative picture serves as a visual depiction of the negative effects of climate change and habitat loss as well as a sobering reminder of the essential relationship that exists between an animal and its environment.
