Photographer Brian Dowling hails from the United States but calls Berlin, Germany, home at present (Germany). Throughout his “Redhead Beauty” project, he has shot images of over 130 ladies with red hair from 20 different countries.
Blonde hair is the only other color except for red that can compete with the rarity of red hair. The MC1R genetic mutation, which causes red hair and is found in around one percent of the world’s population, is responsible for the condition. The threshold at which a person feels pain, their sensitivity to sunlight, and the rate at which their hair greys can all be affected by a mutation in this gene. As you become older, the reddish hue of your hair will gradually lighten and eventually turn white.
It took him three summers to finish this portrait project to do it justice and capture the true beauty of red hair. In addition, he had the intention of helping to dispel the many misconceptions people have about people with red hair. On Kickstarter, he is attempting to raise money to publish his illustrated book titled “Redhead Beauty.”
